The Ohio State city of Lebanon, county seat of Warren County, has a population of just over 20,000 and once had its own racecourse. The city has a rich, proud history dating back to 1802 when the town was planned out on land owned by Ichabod Corwin. Its 4 furlong oval track, with 140 metre home straight, hosted its inaugural meeting on 13th May 1948, and in its prime could hold 6000 people, with the capacity to accommodate half of them in the grandstand. The principal races were staged in May when the feature was the Ohio Sires Stakes, but crowds were seldom large, and the track and its facilities began to show their age at the turn of the millennium. Disaster struck in 2009 when a fire gutted the stables, claiming the lives of 35 horses and 2 of their trainers, and the track never really recovered from it. The final meeting was held on 7th December 2013, after which no one seemed to know how best to use the site once racing ceased. However, Lebanon still has a racetrack called Miami Valley which opened on 7th February 2014.
